changes in GTA policies following the cfx.re acquisition

On August 11, 2023, Rockstar Games announced changes to their policies. Find out what exactly has changed and who the changes affect in this article.

After acquisition: Adjustment in the Rockstar Games guidelines

On August 11, 2023, Rockstar Games announced a notable shift in their policy regarding Grand Theft Auto’s online services. Whereas until March 2017 only the official Grand Theft Auto Online service was recognized, the acquisition of Cfx.re and its integration as an official platform marked a clear change in the company’s approach.

Cfx.re, the team behind the popular roleplay servers FiveM and RedM, had previously operated in a gray area: They were not officially authorized by Rockstar, yet no measures were taken for their shutdown. This recent development suggests that Rockstar Games might now be more receptive to modifications and community projects.

However, there remains some uncertainty for other unofficial services like RageMP and AltV. While they have so far benefitted from Rockstar Games’ tolerance, it’s unclear if these services will be officially acknowledged or potentially pursued legally in the future. Still, some in the community have expressed hope that Rockstar Games’ recent actions might signal a more positive stance towards community-driven projects.
